The Road Less Traveled
During
low flow conditions travelers along the Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail can drive across one of several stream fords in Shawnee
Forest.
The smooth weathered sandstone creek bed acts as an artificial bridge allowing the crossing of the stream when
the water is low.
This naturally occurring phenomenon allowed early explorers and settlers places to cross
a river or stream before bridges were constructed.
Many towns and cities derive their from "Ford" such
as Oxford (a ford where oxen crossed the river).
The fords may become impassable after a heavy rain
or during flooding conditions so caution should be used.
Crossing a stream using one of the fords gives a
traveler a much different prespective than that of the main road.
